“who is the one that is dragging the corpse?
Before beginning any work on ourselves, it is necessary to know what it is we are trying to transform. This is the being. Our fundamental essence.
In the beginning of the work, this can be intellectually known as the observer, that which observes the coming and going of thoughts in the mind and the fluctuations of emotion. In the early stages, much of the work is in learning to identify as this subjective awareness rather than as the passing thoughts and feelings.
As we become more acquainted with this observer, we may begin to ask the question, who is observing the observer and who is observing the observer observing the observer? So on into eternity, like two mirrors facing each other.
This leads us to the fundamental mind realization of basic space. The luminous blackness from which all forms arise and to which they return.
Having stabilized this realization we can now begin to ask the question, what is the essence of the I am? The true me, behind and beyond all that which arises in the foreground of our awareness?
For this it is necessary to begin to think in terms of essence.
